Irena Jun
master of the word, professor at the Theatre Academy
One of the most outstanding Polish theatre actresses, continuously associated with Teatr Studio in Warsaw since 1972. In 2013 she celebrated 55 years of artistic work.
Piwnica Poetycka (Poetry Cellar): evenings of poems read to the audience and together with it. The hosts were Irena Jun, Anna Bojarska and Marek Urbański, who invited different guests to every meeting: actors, poets and musicians. Admission was, and still is, free.

“PIWNICA POETYCKA” is a series of meetings with poetry, at which poems are read in front of and together with the audience by the outstanding Polish actress, master of the WORD and professor at the Theatre Academy in Warsaw, IRENA JUN, accompanied artistically and organisationally by Anna Bojarska and Marek Urbański and by the special guests and artists they invite, different at every meeting. The cellar readings are always accompanied by live music, performed by specially invited instrumentalists or singers. This is a Warsaw initiative. Our idea was inspired by the work of Anna Dymna and her Kraków Poetry Salon, and also by the Poetry Salon of the same name at Teatr Polski, running since January 2011.
Its aim, however, is to give Warsaw audiences more frequent and direct meetings with IRENA JUN herself and with her view of interpreting a poem, of poetry, and of contact through reading together: a poem “becoming” in the mind and in the heart. This living and partly improvised form of contact with the audience and with poetry arouses great interest. Our Piwnica Poetycka has a formula similar to, but slightly different from, the “Salon”. It began its cellar explorations of poetry in Żoliborz in Warsaw, and until 2018 it was a “wandering cellar”, moving between friendly places in this extraordinary district of our city. Admission to the meetings was and still is free. This unusual journey had the patronage and organisational support of the then Mayor of Żoliborz District, Krzysztof Bugla. The “Piwnica Poetycka” project is dedicated to Kalina Jędrusik and began in the year of the twentieth anniversary of her passing; it is dedicated to the atmosphere of the HOME of Kalina Jędrusik and Stanisław Dygat, and to the atmosphere of the Homes of Żoliborz!
“a poem becoming itself in the mind and in the heart”
2021 marks 30 years since the death of Kalina Jędrusik and the 90th anniversary of her birth.
We would like to recall and revive, at least for a moment, the atmosphere of the homes of the pre-war Polish intelligentsia, and to give our guests courage and faith in the meaning and necessity of “expressing oneself”. In our Cellar GENERATIONS meet, including people of different cultures and backgrounds; they reach for thoughts and poems, for emotions set aside and sometimes forgotten.
All this is fulfilled within the broader artistic and social project “Muzykalność na życie” (Musicality for Life), initiated by Anna Bojarska in 1991 and continued since 1996, together with Marek Urbański, to this day. Wonderful and extraordinary artists join it.
It has been carried out in stages in various Polish cities since the day of Kalina Jędrusik’s death, 7 August 1991. It stays true to the intention of Stanisław Dygat’s saying “Muzykalność na życie”, which tries to describe developing in oneself the ability to hear and to notice the particular stirrings of human sensitivity, to sense, discover, hold on to and develop talents not yet known to us, and to promote young, gifted people. THE CELLARS WANDERED AROUND ŻOLIBORZ; today the meetings are being reborn in Praga-Południe and may perhaps appear in other districts of Warsaw.
The Cellars gather their own audience: about 100 people come to almost every meeting. They are held under the patronage of the Warsaw Branch of the Association of Polish Writers. The initiator of the Cellars is Anna Bojarska, and the hosts of each meeting are IRENA JUN, Anna Bojarska and Marek Urbański, together with the guests they invite.
From 16 October 2011 to April 2018, 52 meetings of Piwnica Poetycka were held, with outstanding actors of the Polish stage taking part, among them:
Three actors who share Irena Jun’s school of the spoken word.

“Wit Stwosz”
based on the poem by Konstanty Ildefons Gałczyński
“So how can we define, briefly and simply, the fundamental idea of the poem, which both hides and reveals itself? What is it ‘about’?
– About the spiritual kinship of artists from even the most distant eras.
– About the artist’s fidelity to art. And art’s fidelity to its mission – its calling.
And about the fact that this is what makes it timeless.”
Stanisław Balbus
Kraków, 25 May 2015
On 17 December at 6 pm, at Tęcza od Kuchni, ul. Suzina 8, there will be the opening of an exhibition of sketches by the artist, architect and teacher Witold Poraj-Kuczewski, who died in 1966. The exhibition of pen sketches, watercolours and colour impressions, entitled "Spojrzenia" ("Glances"), is held under the patronage of Krzysztof Bugla, Mayor of the Żoliborz District, and will run until 31 January 2018. It covers works from 1954 to the mid-1960s. These are the "glances" of an architect-artist at fragments of historic architecture, landscape, and what lies around him. A fleeting moment of vanished life in miniature and line. It is a reminder of the work and creativity of a graduate of the Faculty of Architecture at Warsaw University of Technology (1933) and winner of a 1935 prize in a nationwide competition for urban planning of the centre of Warsaw. These successes resulted in Kuczewski being invited to work on the construction of the port in Gdynia. The outbreak of war put an end to all plans and bound the artist's fate once more to his family's occupied Warsaw and the Warsaw Uprising. Having survived, he returned to the coast, where he organised the Chair of Architecture at the newly founded Gdańsk University of Technology and taught drawing there, while also working, as an eminent pre-war urban planner, in the Spatial Planning Directorate in Gdańsk. He also helped rebuild devastated Warsaw, working in the Miasto-projekt studio of the capital. His artistic work is an expression of what he did professionally as a visionary urban planner. It confirms the soundness of his craft as a draughtsman, and the mission of an architect with deeply humanist views. Witold Poraj-Kuczewski's works were collected and kept by the artist's recently deceased daughter, the painter Ina Biol (Halina Kuczewska). And it is she who, symbolically, through a few of her own paintings, will welcome the exhibition's guests and lead them through the streets, small towns and roads in her father's drawings to an intimate, emotional meeting in... "Spojrzenia".

"Bolesław Leśmian lived in the interwar period, and his work escapes the influence of history, being realised rather in philosophical-metaphysical and psychological dimensions. The author drew on the work of the Baroque, Romanticism and Young Poland. The Romantic influences are above all everything that is mystical, spiritual and paranormal, everything deeply bound up with Nature and God. He drew on Romantic drama, used irony and paradox, and refreshed and modernised the ballad…
“Once again, our warm thanks to you for our shared wanderings around Żoliborz among poems and poets.”
Poems by the Columbus generation with music by Zygmunt Konieczny arranged by Mikołaj Majkusiak, with the Warsaw Rising Museum, closing the Old Town 1944 Remembrance Day.

We warmly invite you to the 40th, very special Piwnica Poetycka, "Amulety…" ("Amulets…")! We will read poems by poets of Jewish origin, or whose work is linked with Jewish culture and tradition, writing in Polish: Julian Tuwim, Bolesław Leśmian, Antoni Słonimski, Maurycy Szymel, Icyk Manger, Izrael Sztern, Tadeusz Nowak, Jerzy Ficowski… Performing will be Anna Bojarska and Marek Urbański and a special and extraordinary guest: Bieta Ficowska. Ms Bieta's presence is also symbolic for us and, in a sense, metaphysical... This year Piwnica Poetycka celebrates its fifth anniversary... Ms Bieta was the patron of the first Piwnica, at which on 16 October 2011 we read poems by Jerzy Ficowski! Now we will read as a trio! After the meeting-performance we invite you to a conversation! Ms Irena Jun, with whom we have the honour of co-creating the PIWNICA meetings in ŻOLIBORZ, is recovering and we are really LOOKING FORWARD to seeing her!
The musical guests will be the excellent instrumentalists Marta Maślanka (cimbalom) and Małgorzata Szarlik-Woźniak (violin).
And all this as part of the series of meetings "Muzykalność na życie" ("A Musicality for Life"), dedicated to the atmosphere of the homes of Old Żoliborz, to Kalina Jędrusik and Stanisław Dygat.
Under the patronage and with the support of Krzysztof Bugla, Mayor of the Żoliborz District. You are warmly invited, AND PLEASE INVITE your loved ones too!

Dear Friends!
This meeting is a November remembrance of our nearest and dearest, those who have departed recently and many years ago. Those who "are on the other side"
We will speak of them and think of them through the poems of Edgar Lee Masters, together with Adam Woronowicz and Iwona Rapacz.
Each of us already carries departures within. This will be about that. About departure through life. We warmly invite you. Please invite those close to you and those not so close. Pass it on.
133 performers. “Jeśli miłość jest prawdą, to ciała nie widać”, concert recording “Ta nasza młodość” by Zygmunt Konieczny, the concert’s last song
On 27 October 2015 at 8 pm, the Warsaw Rising Museum will host an extraordinary, intergenerational concert of the music of Zygmunt Konieczny, “Jeśli miłość jest prawdą, to ciała nie widać” (If Love Is the Truth, the Body Cannot Be Seen) (Fr Jan Twardowski). It is a distinctive musical portrait of the Composer. The music of Zygmunt Konieczny will be translated into the sounds of violas da gamba, large harps, Celtic harps, the duduk, pianos, and the voices of choirs and soloists. The programme includes instrumental works written by Zygmunt Konieczny between 2011 and 2014 – contemporary pieces scored for early instruments, violas da gamba. The composer wants to show an audience that lives daily in a rush, in a world full of noise, the qualities of the warm, quiet and subtle sound of an early instrument, the viola da gamba. In the concert we will also hear selected pieces of film music (“Jancio Wodnik”, “Pornografia”, “Jasminum”, “Prymas Tysiąclecia”) and theatre music (“Wyspiański”, “Kontrapunkt”, “Sztukmistrz z Lublina”, “Brat Naszego Boga”, “Szopka Krakowska”) by Zygmunt Konieczny, arranged for the sounds of harps, gambas, duduk, pianos and voices, composed between 1959 and 2014. There will also be new arrangements of famous songs performed in the 1960s and made famous by Ewa Demarczyk and Anna Szałapak of Kraków’s Piwnica pod Baranami – songs to poems by Polish poets: Stanisław Wyspiański, Julian Tuwim, Czesław Miłosz, Krzysztof Kamil Baczyński, Fr Jan Twardowski, Agnieszka Osiecka, Miron Białoszewski, Bolesław Leśmian, Andrzej Dobrzański, Kazimierz Przerwa-Tetmajer and Tadeusz Śliwiak.
Zygmunt Konieczny will take part in the concert as the composer of the project and a performer. Free tickets can be collected at the Warsaw Rising Museum box office from 16 October 2015 during box office hours. The number of places is limited. Detailed information about the project is available on the website www.fundacjaens.org.pl.
The organisers are the ENS Foundation for Culture and National Heritage and Piwnica Poetycka, with the support of the National Centre for Culture.
