“Eryk XIV” directed by Jerzy Gruza, Klatka po Klatce VI
Description
Dear Friends! On Wednesday 12 November 2025 at 6 pm, free admission, we invite you to 4 Boremlowska Street, to Kredens pod Oknami, for another intimate meeting with a TV play directed by Jerzy Gruza, “Eryk XIV”, starring Marek Walczewski!
Year of production: 1979. Premiere: 12 November 1979 (we are managing to screen it exactly on the anniversary of the premiere). Colour, 118 min.
In Strindberg’s drama about Eric XIV, literary historians have seen an analogy with Shakespeare’s “Hamlet”, and in the figure of the king living on the edge of madness they have recognised a stylised self-portrait of the author. Eric XIV, son of Gustav I, the founder of the Vasa dynasty, sat on the Swedish throne for only eight years. In 1568 he was deposed and imprisoned by the magnates led by his half-brothers – John, Duke of Finland, married to Catherine Jagiellon, and Charles, Duke of Södermanland, later King Charles IX of Sweden, who was soundly defeated at Kircholm by his Polish nephew Sigismund III Vasa.
Eric unsuccessfully sought the hand of Queen Elizabeth I of England, of the Tudors, or of Mary of the Scottish Stuart dynasty. Strindberg is interested precisely in this last, difficult period in the life of the Swedish monarch. Knowing that the king’s courtship in England has failed, Göran Persson, the éminence grise of the Stockholm court, asks Eric’s concubine to be at his side when this blow strikes him…

Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays. Part two of the season.
On rainy days at Kredens pod Oknami, Szklanych Domów 13. On sunny days, screenings at Szklanych Domów 9a
12.08. Thursday, 8:30 pm. "Gdzie jest Trzeci Król" ("Where Is the Third King") /Polish film, 1967/
The screenplay was based on the novel by Kazimierz Kwaśniewski (another pen name of Maciej Słomczyński, that is Joe Alex), "Gdzie jest Trzeci Król?" (Warsaw 1966). Filming took place in the interiors of the castle in Kórnik. Commissioner Didot of Interpol arrives in Poland, charged with breaking up the "Syndicate" – an international gang of art thieves led by one Gruber. The criminals' next target is to be a valuable painting of a medieval ruler kept in the museum in Bory. Captain Stefan Berent and Lieutenant Katarzyna Rogalska of the Citizens' Militia headquarters go there incognito, with the task of swapping the painting for a copy to protect it from theft. Art historian Professor Gawroński arrives with them. At the museum they meet the six people currently working there: the curator Janas, his deputy Wilczkiewicz, the secretary Wanda and three conservators. Starring Andrzej Łapicki. Running time: 1 h 19 min
14.08. Saturday, 8:30 pm. "NOS" ("The Nose") / Polish film novella, 1971 / An adaptation of the well-known novella by Nikolai Gogol.
The hero of this story, full of amusing as well as thought-provoking paradoxes, is a collegiate assessor who arrives in the capital to win a wealthy wife and a high position in the official hierarchy. Russia in the time of the author of "Dead Souls" was a true "society of uniforms", in which a person's worth was decided by their place on the civil-service ladder. This cult of rank, however, becomes the cause of the hero's misfortunes, as at one point he loses... his nose. Branded with the stigma of being different, he can no longer dream of promotion in a uniformed world. To make matters worse, the nose begins, as it were, to live a life of its own and becomes... a state councillor. Which is far, far more than a poor collegiate assessor. Starring Zdzisław Maklakiewicz. Screenplay and direction: Stanisław Lenartowicz. Running time: 26 minutes
"ODWIEDZINY O ZMIERZCHU" ("Visit at Dusk") based on a short story by Tadeusz Rittner / Polish film novella, 1966 / The action of this tale, not without a certain spice of manners, is set at the end of the 19th century. Its characters are a beautiful lady, her lover, an old aristocrat, a servant and a mysterious man in black. The lady is bored by the side of her lover, an old aristocrat who has already become tiresome to her. A man in mourning appears by chance at her house. Heartbroken after the death of his wife, absent in spirit, he has mistaken the door. The lady decides to console him in his misfortune. Screenplay and direction: Jan Rybkowski. Starring Kalina Jędrusik and Gustaw Holoubek. Running time: 27 minutes.
MIKS 1. Entertainment magazine – Kabaret z Lamusa /1963/ Ballads, memories, lyrical jokes. The first black-and-white entertainment programmes directed by Olga Lipińska: ballads, memories, lyrical jokes, songs. Performers include Alina Janowska, Wojciech Pokora, Kalina Jędrusik, Jan Kobuszewski, Tadeusz Pluciński, Zofia Merle, Barbara Wrzesińska and others. Running time: 40 min
17.08 Tuesday, 8:30 pm. "SCENY Z życia Holly Golightly" ("Scenes from the Life of Holly Golightly") based on Truman Capote (Breakfast at Tiffany's, TV Theatre 1971). A psychological study of a young American woman, Holly Golightly. Her image embodies the psyche and mentality of a woman freed from bourgeois limitations and prejudices. Holly knows the value of the world, the weight of a bank account and of luxury, and at the same time, in her immense, naive honesty and carefreeness, tries to put into practice the principle of loyalty in her dealings with an alien and ruthless environment. Screenplay: Stanisław Dygat. Direction: Kazimierz Kutz. Starring Kalina Jędrusik and Marian Opania. Running time: 1 h 15 min.
19.08. Thursday, 8:30 pm. "Idziemy do wujka" ("We're Going to Uncle's") by Jerzy Zawieyski. TV Theatre, 1989. Klemens lives with his beloved Paulina in a remote place. He constantly fears that some stranger will disturb his quiet and peaceful life. One day a young man, Izydor-Horacy, comes to Klemens with his wife. He claims that Klemens is his uncle, whom he has been looking for in order to live with him. During the Second World War the uncle was a division commander – a heroic role model for many young people. But Klemens does not admit to having a nephew. He does not want to be an object of a young man's adulation, because he has become a frightened, embittered man. He has lost trust in people and faith in life and in the ideals he once proclaimed. Direction: Zdzisław Wardejn. Starring Henryk Bista and Kalina Jędrusik. Running time: 67 minutes
21.08 Saturday, 8:15 pm. "LALKA" ("The Doll") based on the novel by Bolesław Prus. Feature film by W. J. Has (1968). An adaptation of the novel by Bolesław Prus. The story of the wealthy Warsaw merchant Stanisław Wokulski and his love for the beautiful but impoverished aristocrat Izabela Łęcka. To this destructive feeling Wokulski subordinates his business interests, entering into arrangements with aristocratic families that are unfavourable to himself, wanting to help his beloved indirectly… /www.filmpolski.pl/ Adaptation, screenplay and direction: Jerzy Wojciech Has. Starring Mariusz Dmochowski, Tadeusz Fijewski, Beata Tyszkiewicz. Running time: 2 h 30 min.
24.08. Tuesday, 8:15 pm. "Jutro premiera" ("Premiere Tomorrow") based on the play "Trzeci dzwonek" ("The Third Bell") by J. Jurandot (1962). A beginner playwright, Zenon Wiewiórski, is trying to get the "Studio" Theatre to stage his play, entitled "Trzeci dzwonek". He comes to the theatre and waits patiently in the foyer for the director, who two weeks earlier promised to read the work. On stage the dress rehearsal of Shakespeare's "Twelfth Night" is under way, with the outstanding actress Janina Radwańska in the cast. During a short conversation in the break, the director, Zakrzewski, praises Wiewiórski's play and announces that it will be staged. Radwańska, who wants to play the lead, also speaks flatteringly of the text. Direction: Janusz Morgenstern. Starring Gustaw Holoubek, Irena Malkiewicz, Kalina Jędrusik, Wieńczysław Gliński, Barbara Krafftówna
26.08. Thursday, 8:15 pm. "Lekarstwo na miłość" ("A Cure for Love") based on Joanna Chmielewska (1966). A sensational comedy of manners built on a formula of wrong telephone numbers. Joanna, a young Varsovian, loves Janusz without being loved in return. By chance she is drawn into an affair involving banknote forgers, who kidnap her. The head of the gang turns out to be Janusz, and the mysterious Andrzej a captain of the Citizens' Militia. He will become her "cure for love". Direction: Jan Batory. Starring Kalina Jędrusik, Krystyna Sienkiewicz, Wieńczysław Gliński, Andrzej Łapicki. The film song "Witamina M" ("Vitamin M"), with music by Jan Matuszkiewicz and words by Z. Zeppert, is sung by B. Czyżewski. Running time: 1 h 35 min
28.08. Saturday, 8:15 pm. "JOWITA" based on a screenplay by Tadeusz Konwicki (1967). At a fancy-dress ball Marek meets the mysterious Jowita and falls under her charm. When the girl disappears without a word, the hero decides to find her. Award for direction at the San Sebastián festival. State Prize, 3rd class, for the director. A contemporary existential drama, a screen adaptation of the novel by Stanisław Dygat entitled "Disneyland". The hero, a talented athlete, does not know what he wants to do in life. He achieves sporting success but draws no satisfaction from it. He lives in the dream of a great love, as he deludes himself that genuinely experienced passion will allow him to find himself. Starring Daniel Olbrychski, Barbara Kwiatkowska, Zbigniew Cybulski, Kalina Jędrusik, Ignacy Gogolewski. Running time: 1 h 31 min
31.08. Tuesday. "KALINA", directed and produced by Jan Sosiński and Zbigniew Dzięgiel. A film story about Kalina Jędrusik, made from surviving radio interviews and archive materials. Made in the year of the Artist's death (07.08.1991). Running time: 57 minutes.
